Tutorial formats

There are 3 different formats of tutorial available in the Nature Studio. All are graded by experience level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced or Pro). You can filter by Tutorial Format on the Tutorial Library page.

1. Step-by-Step Tutorials

Step-by-Step Tutorials make up the majority of tutorials. They show you every step of how to paint a whole subject.

Shorter Step-By-Step tutorials contain fewer videos and will often include the reference photo on screen as well to make a quick painting session as easy as possible. So the idea is you don’t even need a second screen or a colour print-off to work from.  These were previously known as 'Sketchbook Tutorials'.  Please note - We’ve done our best to colour match the reference photo and my painting accurately but there's always going to be a tiny variation when you go from real life to the computer screen via video cameras and video editing software!

This format has worked wonders for members. But there’s also a limit to the complexity of a subject that can be demoed in this way without the videos running way too long (as it is they’re often over 1.5 hours!) which is why the other two tutorial formats were introduced.

2. Quick Reference Tutorials

Quick Reference tutorials demo a particular colour mix or visual texture. They often show you how to paint a section of a complex subject, usually covered in a related Solo tutorial

They can be used in 3 ways:

  • As you start to create your own artwork, you can refer to them if you get stuck mixing a colour or creating a texture.
  • They can be a bit of quick, relaxed, painting practice in your sketchbook.
  • They can be ideal prep for their related Solo Tutorials.

3. Solo Tutorials

For when you've reached a certain level of experience and are ready to paint something more complex with minimal video help, Solo Tutorials are here to support you. You can prepare for them by completing the related Colour & Texture Tutorials.

For more info on how to paint along with the videos see this article.
